The Swindon Catholic Deanery's Marriage Course

Sessions     Feedback    Enquiries & Enrolment    Photos

The Marriage Course has been running annually in the Swindon Catholic Deanery since 2006.  In 2011 the course ran from February to April, but in 2012 we have decided to run a course on Parenting Teenagers instead in the first part of the year.

Below you can find information about the Marriage Course, what couples think about it, photos, etc.

If you'd like to register your interest for a possible 2012 course that could take place later in the year, please use our online form.  When we receive interest from six or seven couples we shall run the Marriage Course again.

THE COURSE

The Marriage Course takes eight evenings, the last of which is a party. Each evening starts with a brief introduction from a Swindon couple who've taken the course before, followed by the screening of a DVD with two or more breaks to allow  the couples attending to have private discussions.  There is no group discussion at all.  Wine, beer, coffee, tea, chocolates and biscuits are served.  The evening starts at 7:15 for 7:30pm, and runs until about 9:45pm.

The Marriage Course was devised by the Anglican Church at Holy Trinity Brompton, the church that started the Alpha Course.  It has been running since 1996 across the U.K. and internationally, with great success.  40 couples have taken the course in the Swindon Catholic Deanery, and feedback has been extremely positive.  A team of eight of these couples delivered the course in 2011.

The Marriage Course is based on Christian principles and practice, but is nevertheless very respectful of, and helpful to, couples in which only one of the partners is a Christian.

More details are available on the Relationship Central website under The Marriage Course.

To cover expenses, we provide the opportunity for couples to make a small donation each session.  In fact each course so far has generated enough money to pay all the expenses for the course that has followed.

SESSIONS

Here are the 7 sessions covered in The Marriage Course:

   1.  Building strong foundations
   2.  The art of communication
   3.  Resolving conflicts
   4.  The power of forgiveness
   5.  Parents and in-laws
   6.  Good sex
   7.  Love in action

Couples try to attend all the sessions.  If they can't make a particular session, they are able to borrow a DVD for the session they've missed.

The venue in the past has been in West Swindon.  Details are sent to couples once they've made enquiries or enrolled.

FEEDBACK:

Here are some comments from couples in the Swindon Catholic Deanery who took The Marriage Course in early 2011:

  • I'd like to do it again.

  • I thought the session on conflict really helped me to look at things differently.

  • I've enjoyed the course.  The level of openness and humour provided an enjoyably balanced view of marital difficulties and pleasures.

  • We really need time to practice some of the techniques we learnt.

  • Very useful.  We needed some help in looking at our relationship and the course helped us do that.

  • Excellent course.  Everyone should do it, no matter how solid they think their relationship is.

  • The course opened our eyes to see so many little things which were so obviously wrong.

  • We talked about so many things we'd never thought of in our years together.

  • Would definitely recommend this course to friends.

  • We feel the course has nothing but positive benefits.

  • The course has given us direction as to where we would both like our relationship to go.

  • I think it was a very helpful and enjoyable course.

PHOTOS:

We have a party after the end of each series of the Marriage Course. We invite not only the couples who have just finished, but all the past attendees as well.  At our party in May 2010 we had 67 adults and children with us.

The photos below give an idea of some of the people who have attended over the last couple of years.  Photos from parties in 2009 and earlier can be seen here.

P.S.  We never put anyone's photo here unless they give us their permission first.
